Everyone knows that if you’re in Decatur and looking for a great spot for dinner, the best place to hit up is The Square. They’ve got a huge range of delicious options, from adorable desserts to fine-dining for a fancy night out. You could spend hours walking up and down the sidewalk of Decatur Square, popping into art shops and grabbing a coffee at one of the best coffee shops in Atlanta, or just enjoying the beautiful park in the center.
This week, however, Decatur Square experienced an unexpected loss. Taco Mac, the community sports bar, which has become a local chain in the last four decades, is closing up shop.
It’s unclear exactly why Taco Mac is closing its doors to the public, and the only way we know that it’s gone was a note taped to the door, saying they closed Tuesday, September 19th, as the lease expired. The notice also says, “We appreciate all the support the community has given us over the years and have loved serving each one of you,” and that Taco Mac is still hiring new employees, but if it’s placing them at one of the other Atlanta locations is currently unknown. Another Taco Mac location, in Buckhead also closed fairly recently, after an uptick in crime, they said, in 2021.
The original Taco Mac, which opened on North Highland Avenue in 1979 is still there and still open for everyone to get their Taco Mac fix. But Decatur is sad to lose on of their local favorites after 22 years. Taco Mac was known for its tacos, of course, wings and delicious beer.
We hope to learn more about the closing and any possibilities for that property, now that it will be empty for the foreseeable future.
