As one of the Natural Wonders of Georgia, the Amicalola Falls has become an ATL right of passage. Hiking through our beloved Amicalola Falls State Park to reach the highest waterfall in our state is nothing short of breathtaking. Partially due to the fierce climb up, but mostly due to the spectacular views and the enchanting waterfall that awaits.
This gorgeous state park is located roughly one hour and a half away by car, meaning it’s the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of Atlanta without having to go too far away. Once you arrive, prepare for a 829-acre natural oasis that’s painted by ever-changing numbers as the seasons come and go.
The star attraction of Amicalola Falls State Park is obviously Amicalola Falls itself. The reason for the park’s name, and it’s a mighty reason indeed! The magnificent 729-foot waterfall is the third-highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi, and the highest in Georgia. You can even climb the stairs parallel to the waterfall, revealing sneaky views of its green surroundings.
Of course, there are many incredible hikes in and around Atlanta that feature cascades of falling water. However, Amicalola Falls certainly takes the cake.
The park’s name comes from a Cherokee language word meaning “tumbling waters”, and thanks to the modern hiking infrastructure, you’re able to get up close and personal to this beautiful addition to Georgia’s natural beauty. You can even feel the spray from the falling waters, making it a perfect summer hike although it’s beautiful all year round.
If you wish to extend your adventure beyond an unforgettable hike, then there are several ways to make it a mini-staycation! From camping to the Amicalola Falls State Park Lodge, you’re spoilt for choice. The lodge is a great way to experience the park with just a sprinkle of extra adventure. Like their zipline experience, climbing wall, scavenger hunts, and so much more!
