A new daily record in Atlanta
Along with being the fourth wettest July on record, Atlanta’s stormy skies set a new daily rainfall record for July 28th as well. Nearly 25% of the total rainfall for the month of July was recorded from last Sunday. The National Weather Service Peachtree city GA reported a “record daily maximum rainfall set at Atlanta” with 3.46 inches.
The report continues, “this breaks the old record of 3.07 inches set in 1887.”
Average rainfall in Atlanta for the month of July comes in at 4.36 inches, making the whopping 12.70 inches of rain an 8.34 inch surplus!
“We needed this”
Of course, we all heard at least one person look out into the rain and say, “we needed this.” But the common old saying was right this time! With such a hot, dry June, droughts in North Georgia definitely benefitted from the heavy rainfall.
On the other hand, flash flooding and power outages from the storm were reported. To stay safe during a flash flood, avoid crossing through (walking, driving, etc) flash flood waters, especially if you can’t see the bottom. You might not be able to tell how deep puddles are!
And the rain isn’t over yet!
With more rain on the forecast for today, there might be even more rain coming our way!
