We’ve got an update on the proposed passenger train that aims to connect Atlanta and Savannah, and we need your help!
What’s the update on the Atlanta-Savannah rail proposal?
Right now, the Georgia Department of Transportation, or GDOT, is asking for the public’s feedback on the proposal to build a passenger rail line between ATL and Savannah.
The most recent survey is different from previous surveys and studies. You can find it on the GDOT website, here! (Scroll down to where it says ‘NEW SURVEY AVAILABLE!’)
Public input is a great start for the intercity proposal, and could help this project become a reality.
What’s on the survey?

The GDOT is gathering information on current transportation patterns to Savannah from Atlanta (and cities along the way).
They’re asking questions like:
- In the past 2 years, how often have you traveled to the Savannah area?
- When you traveled to the Savannah area in the past 2 years, what was the purpose(s) of your trip(s)?
- Do you sometimes travel for business in Atlanta, Savannah, Athens, Macon, or points in between?
The whole survey takes about 5-10 minutes to complete, and at the end, you’ve got the option to participate further by adding your email to the survey. This step is completely optional, of course.
What is the Atlanta to Savannah passenger rail proposal?

The Atlanta-Savannah Intercity Passenger Rail Project is looking to connect Atlanta and Savannah, and several cities along the way, like Athens, Statesboro, Milledgeville, Macon, Augusta, and more.
Is an Intercity Rail the same thing has a High-Speed Rail?
Not exactly. Let us break it down for you.
An Intercity Rail serves long-distance trips and connects multiple major cities, taking stops at smaller cities in-between. The stations are much further apart than a regular commuter rail (like MARTA), with stops space between 30-80 miles apart.
On the other side of the coin, high speed rails serve the fewest number of stations, not stopping at those smaller, intermediate cities. These rails can reach up to 125 mph, but also require a massive investment.
