July’s full moon, the Buck Moon, will be dazzling in the sky this week! And we know there’s nothing quite like seeing the full moon over the city. Keep scrolling to learn all about July’s Buck Moon–how you can see it, when, and what it means!
When will I be able to see July’s full moon?
The full moon will ~technically~ begin on July 10th, 2025 at 4:36 p.m. EDT.
But since the sun is up at that time in the afternoon, of course, you probably won’t be able to see much. You’ll be able to see the full moon from sunset on, and right after the sun sets, the moon might even have a reddish or golden tint! The sun is expected to set on July 10th at 8:51pm.
Why is July’s full moon called the Buck Moon?

Here’s what Space.com says about the Buck Moon,
The Buck Moon gets its name from the time of year in North America when male deer, known as bucks, begin to grow out their antlers. It’s also sometimes called the ‘Thunder Moon’, in reference to the seasonal summer storms that often rumble across parts of the U.S. in July. The lunar milestone also occurs less than a week after Earth reached aphelion — the point in its orbit that is most distant from the Sun — making it the farthest full moon from the sun in 2025.
Why will the Buck Moon look so low in the sky?

After sunset, you might notice that the Buck Moon looks especially low in the sky. This is due to, according to Space.com, “its proximity to the summer solstice, when the sun is at its highest in the daytime sky, and the moon tracks a correspondingly low path through the night.”
Happy Full Moon, Atlanta! Enjoy the beautiful Buck Moon above the city!
