After nearly a year of delays by the City, officials announced that they’d officially begun renovations on Atlanta’s central stop on our public transport, MARTA. Five Points, the MARTA station on the center of the MARTA map, is getting a total facelift… keep scrolling to get all the details on what we know so far!
What renovations is Five Points getting?
According to a new report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
The Five Points station renovation will be rolled out in phases. They say,
The first phase involves tearing down the station’s concrete canopy so it can later be replaced with a translucent roof.
After this phase is complete, the next step in the complete overhaul will include a brand-new street-level bus bay, along with a green space at the station.
How long will renovations on Five Points station take?
Experts say that the project will likely take about 4 years, meaning completion can be expected in 2029.
Originally, MARTA officials wanted to have renovations competed by the time the FIFA World Cup rolled around in 2026, but now, clearly that is no longer a possibility.
How much will the Five Points station renovations cost?
In total, the project will cost about $230 million. That is broken down further in how it’s being paid for:
The AJC reports,
The approximately $230 million overhaul will be primarily paid for by revenue generated from a halfpenny sales tax for transit expansion projects approved by Atlantans in 2016. Additionally, about $13.8 million is expected to be paid by the state, and about $25 million is expected to be paid through a federal grant.
So if you’re a daily commuter who passes through Five Points Station (or if you ride MARTA on special occasions), you can probably expect some delays for the next few years. Or at least some construction sites while you pass through!
