There are plenty of words that we gloss over when reading… but when asked to say them out loud, it’s actually a little harder than we thought. Mental Floss just reported on a new Google Trends study that searches for the most-searched word pronunciation in each state. Here’s what they found!
What is the hardest word to pronounce in Georgia?

Okay… you might not believe it, but it’s… ‘trailer.’ Yeah, trailer. We’re a little shocked, since this word doesn’t seem to challenging, but apparently people are searching up ‘how to pronounce trailer’ in Georgia.
Other states have a bit more challenging of words on their list, like:
- Florida: Islamorada
- Illinois: Giardiniera
- Maine: Damariscotta
- Mississippi: Reciprocity
- Ohio: Curaçao
- Oklahoma: Macabre
- Wyoming: Bisglycinate
And, okay… we get that. Bisglycinate? Yeah, we’ll have to look that one up too, we think.
But there are also some other less expected hard to pronounce words, like:
- Massachusetts: Massachusetts (no way!!)
- Iowa: Iron
- New York: Peonies
- Washington: Birria
- D.C.: Qatar
Massachusetts… come on, girl. You gotta be able to pronounce your own state! But no, we get it. That’s a hard one to spell too!
You can see the entire list on Mental Floss’ website, here! How did they come up with this data?

Mental Floss says,
To compile this list, Google Trends analyzed search trends from August 14, 2024, to August 14, 2025. The tech company specifically examined searches that began with “how to pronounce … ” by state.
So if you’re not sure how to say a word, don’t worry! You can just look it up. And add to Google Trend’s data for next year’s hardest-to-pronounce data.
And remember, Georgia, it’s trailer: ˈtrālər (tr-eh-ler). (Did you also just realize it’s not t-RAY-ler?)
