What is Juneteenth?
Just in case you don’t know, Juneteenth is a National U.S. holiday that both celebrates and commemorates June 19th, 1865, when Union troops made their way into Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had already ended and the enslaved people there had already been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been purposely ignored by Texas enslavers.
This long-overdue and momentous day has since been celebrated as a day of liberation, called ‘Juneteenth’ or ‘Freedom Day.’ It is celebrated on June 19th every year!
What is the Juneteenth Parade & Music Festival?
The Juneteenth Parade & Music Festival is the City of Atlanta’s official Juneteenth celebration, and takes place in Piedmont Park.
