For two years, the ‘Hot Doughnuts Now’ sign at the Krispy Kreme on Ponce de Leon Avenue has been… shall we say, burnt out.
What happened?
The Krispy Kreme, which first opened in 1965, was a local favorite spot for fresh, delicious glazed doughnuts! In 2016, famous basketball player, Shaquille O’Neal, purchased the Krispy Kreme location and is still a partial owner. The Ponce de Leon Avenue location is also famously the only kosher certified Krispy Kreme in the city.
suffered from two devastating fires in 2021. The first fire, in February of 2021, was ultimately found to be an act of arson, but didn’t finish off the building. In July, another fire ruined the building beyond repair, and for safety purposes, Krispy Kreme decided to fully demolish the building and start from scratch. The second fire had no traces of arson, but authorities still thought it was a ‘suspicious’ fire.
What’s happening now?
But! There’s good news on the Ponce Krispy Kreme front!
Finally, on Tuesday of next week, October 10th, after two years of missing the old Krispy Kreme, a brand new building will be opening its doors!
The iconic doughnuts will be warm and delicious, and ready for hungry customers!
There are some differences now, however. The 24-hour drive thru window will no longer be open all hours of the day. Now the hours will be Sunday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The building has been modernized, of course, from the adorable doughnut shop from the 1960s, but don’t worry! The iconic Krispy Kreme sign from the original building way back in the shop’s golden days, has been restored. It will stand proudly out front to show the Ponce Krispy Kreme’s resilience.
So don’t wait! Get your spot in line on the grand re-opening of Atlanta’s favorite Krispy Kreme on Ponce de Leon Avenue!
