When is December’s full moon?
You’ll be able to see the full moon over the city all night on Thursday, December 4th, 2025. But the best time to see peak illumination on the east coast will be 6:15pm. Good thing it gets dark so early now, huh!
Why is it called the Cold Moon?

It might seem obvious, but December’s full moon is called the Cold Moon because… it’s cold. According to the BBC,
December’s full Moon is known as the Cold Moon and marks the start of winter as it occurs near the solstice. It has also been known as the Long Night Moon and the Moon before Yule.
A good reminder to bundle up when you go outside to moon-gaze!
Why is December’s full moon a supermoon?
December’s supermoon is special because it’s actually the third consecutive supermoon of the year: October, November, December! A supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, called perigee, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac!
Because it’s a supermoon, moon-gazers will see a slightly larger moon—up to 8% larger in diameter and 16% brighter. And that will seem like a lot more when you’re looking up at the night sky!
