Where the arcade heroes come to drink.
When someone invites to “my parents’ basement” the reaction tends to range from learned caution to outright physical ejection of conversation. This changes when you find the basement is filled with retro arcade games and booze. My Parent’s Basement in Avondale Estates is like that but much much less seedy. [Featured image: @batbatsoda]
All jokes aside, My Parents’ Basement is wholesome place where fellow nerds gather to drink, read comics, grub on nostalgic bites, and empty their pocket change into old gaming machines. The bar’s first iteration began as a pop-up by a group of friends before they established the brick and mortar bar and patio at 22 N Avondale Rd in 2015.
MPB features a full comic book store where readers and collectors can buy, sell, and trade:
“Specializing in new issues, trade paper backs, and rarities our goal is to be accessible for comic vets and new readers alike,” the bar writes on its website. “Want to set up a pull list or have questions no one else can answer? Our qualified staff can point you in the right direction! Looking to branch out and find something new to read? We can help. Don’t see what you are looking for? We can special order.”
The bar also boasts the title of the top pinball location in Atlanta. The basement is packed with 20 machines that range from Attack From Mars (limited edition), Elvira House of Horrors, and Ghostbusters, to Star Trek, Stranger Things, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All machines are cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis.
At this moment, dine-in services are available for the patio only, whereas visitors must wear masks when perusing the comic book store or gaming in the pinball arcade.
In addition to their fantastic selection of draft, canned, and bottled craft beer, MPB offers a full menu stacked with burgers, sandwiches, salads, tacos, nachos, and desserts to boot.
MPB is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 10 pm.
