Georgia is already known as one of the most highly-educated states in the U.S., and now it’s no surprise that we’re also home to two of the nation’s top universities. With the falling popularity of Ivy League schools, the up-and-coming universities, or, as Forbes calls them, the ‘New Ivies’ are getting a whole new spotlight.
Which two Georgia universities are among the ‘New Ivies’ according to Forbes?
Georgia has one public and one private university on its list:
- Georgia Institute of Technology-Main Campus, also known as Georgia Tech (16% acceptance rate)
- Emory University (11% acceptance rate)
How did Forbes select the new Ivies?

Here’s what Forbes says about the New Ivies,
For the second year, Forbes New Ivies has selected 10 outstanding public universities and 10 top private schools that are attracting the best and the brightest, and graduating students that are outpacing most Ivy Leaguers in the eyes of employers. These colleges are highly selective—applicants have a one in seven chance, or slimmer, to gain admission to one of the private New Ivies, and a 50% chance or less to enroll at one of the 10 mostly large public universities.
According to Forbes, the New Ivies are also highly selective based on SAT score, with the private New Ivies admitting students with a a median SAT score of 1530 (slightly higher than the nation’s largest Ivy, Cornell University, which has a median SAT score of 1520).
Here’s how the numbers size up

With an acceptance rate of 11%, Emory students are some of the top students in the nation. Their 50th percentile SAT score sits above the Ivy League median, at 1520, and their 50th percentile ACT is a solid 33. Their undergrad enrollment is below 10,000 students, at 7,606.
With an acceptance rate of 16%, Georgia Tech is one of the top public institutions in the U.S. Their 50th percentile SAT score is 1450, and their 50th percentile ACT is a 32. They do have a higher enrollment for undergraduates, with 19,888 undergrads.
