There’s a huge update for the city’s MARTA expansion plan. We know where the new stations are going to be located now!
At the end of March, Mayor André Dickens announced he would open four new MARTA stations across Atlanta to support public transport. The only location he announced, however was at Murphy Crossing, on the BeltLine’s Westside Trail. This comes, of course, right after the news that the city plans to move forward with the light rail along the Beltline as well.
Where will the new MARTA stations be?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, “On Thursday, the mayor announced the remaining three locations: Krog Street/Hulsey Yard, Joseph E. Boone and Armour Yards. The announcement came through an administrative order outlining the ambitious partnership between the city, Atlanta Beltline Inc. and MARTA.”
With more stops along the route, MARTA will be more accessible to Atlantans. The goal is to widen the city’s public transport reach.
The AJC report also includes a statement from Mayor Dickens: “It is imperative that our transportation investments are strategically and equitably deployed to increase ridership on MARTA’s heavy rail network and bus system fostering a more connected and unified Atlanta.”
No specific details on how the project will be paid for have been announced. We also do not currently know an exact timeline for the new station project.
More Marta news
Even more Marta news–the Airport Station is closed for renovations from April 8th – May 19th. A shuttle will be running temporarily from College Park to the North Terminal Lower Level in place of the station.
There is obviously tons of MARTA construction going on (you’ve probably seen it around town)–but it’ll all be worth it for more accessible and reliable public transport around our city!
