Renegade Theatre is breathing new life into an old classic, and you definitely don’t want to miss it. This experimental theatre company’s performance of Our Town by Thornton Wilder is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
Renegade’s Our Town
You probably read Our Town in high school, or maybe you saw a performance of it in college for class, but you’ve never seen it like this before. Set in the early 1900s, this play follows the tragically short life of Emily Webb and her childhood love-turned husband. She lives in a small town, and everything is all quite ordinary. Until she dies, and she gets to reflect on mortality and life, and she realizes none of it–not the sun shining, not the milkman bringing bottles of milk, not the town drunk–none of it was ordinary at all. Every single moment of life is precious, and now it’s too late. Guided by the all-knowing ‘Stage Manager’, Emily has to face the devastation that living people don’t get it, do they?
And what’s so special about this version of the play?
The iconic couple, George and Emily, are played by three different sets of age-appropriate actors. In the first act, the couple is represented by a heterosexual couple, as written, in the second act, they’re a gay couple played by two men, and in the final act, they’re a lesbian couple, played by two women.
