What’s going on?
Atlanta hosted its first World Cup match at Atlanta Stadium today, beginning at 12pm local time, and it did not go as expected!
Spain, who was not only the favorite to win this match, but is actually one of the favorite to win the whole World Cup, just tied in a no-scoring match with Cape Verde, the 2nd smallest country to ever make it to the World Cup.
This epic battle to the end of the game actually also included 5 minutes of overtime, in which neither team scored a goal.
A ton of the credit is being given to the “heroic performance” by Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha.
According to the Associated Press,
Barcelona forward Ferran Torres came closest to scoring for Spain, hitting the bar with shot and later forcing a save from Vozinha on another well-struck ball.
So… can Spain still win the World Cup?
Yes. It’s still a possibility, of course.
According to a report by The Athletic,
This result won’t affect their standing in that regard too much, but it will drastically change the way people discuss their chances.
Many are calling this a win for Cape Verde, even though it wasn’t ~technically~ a win for anyone.
