In the beginning of the 20th century, Atlanta was a railroad center that brought musical genres and influences from all over the country, including blues and ragtime. Consequently, jazz joints started popping up in Sweet Auburn where performers like Ma Rainey and Blind Willie McTell would wow audiences with their passion and talent. In celebration of one of the most beloved genres, The Jazz Room in Atlanta is bringing electrifying performances of beloved songs and improvisations that capture the spirit of jazz.
On selected dates over the coming months, a local jazz band will take audiences on a musical journey to the Big Easy by taking on Louis Armstrong’s “When The Saints Go Marching In” and Fats Waller’s “Ain’t Misbehavin'” among others at Wild Heaven Beer in Atlanta’s historic West End neighborhood. Places are limited so secure your spot now.
What is The Jazz Room?
Stepping into The Jazz Room is akin to finding a hidden doorway to a 1920s New Orleans street-style bar. This 60-minute experience brings a curated set list of jazz classics to life, performed by talented musicians under the soft glow of a stage street lamp. Expect to hear renditions of “Georgia On My Mind”, “Summertime”, “Cantaloupe Island”, alongside spirited improvisations, setting a soulful tone for an evening of musical immersion.
Jazz, its story and the show
Jazz, born from the heart of New Orleans’ African-American communities, is a blend of musical traditions: African rhythms, European harmonies, and Caribbean influences. Syncopation, improvisation, and expressive individuality define its unique sound, with early forms like blues and ragtime laying the groundwork.
The Jazz Room aims to capture this authentic spirit by intertwining classic pieces with moments of spontaneous improvisation and solos. The ambiance is designed to transport you to a dimly lit New Orleans setting. A drink in hand, soft lighting, and the timeless sounds of jazz create an atmosphere that celebrates the genre’s rich heritage.
