Atlanta is embarking on a massive overhaul of the trail systems in the city, and we’re so excited for it. The Trails ATL Master Plan is a huge 535-mile trail plan that aims to connect people living in the city to green spaces, high-quality trails, and of course, each other. Keep scrolling for all the details about this amazing trial plan!
What is Trails ATL?
Trails ATL is a network of trails that will connect Atlantans to high-quality walking/hiking trials, green spaces, parks, and other ATL neighborhoods. The PATH Foundation, which has worked in the city since 1991 to build beautiful green spaces, and trails, has partnered with the City of Atlanta to bring about Trails ATL.
Atlantans love trails and want more. The City has responded by partnering with the PATH Foundation to create a city-wide trail plan called Trails ATL.
The goal? Trails ATL says,
Once complete, the trail network expansion will provide 10-minute walk/wheelchair access to safe and inviting trails for 95% of Atlantans.

Trails ATL has four key principals that guide their trail construction:
- Be inclusively planned and designed.
- Promote health and wellness for all, including children, seniors and people with disabilities.
- Enable safe, inviting and equitable access to parks, schools, transit and economic opportunity.
- Enhance, showcase and connect us to the natural world.
When will Trails ATL be completed?

This massive overhaul of the green spaces and trail system in the ATL will take some time. Currently the city and the PATH Foundation plan to roll out these trails in phases.
Here’s the plan by expected year of completion:
- 2025: 81 miles of trails give 37% of Atlantans access to trails 10-minutes from their homes.
- 2029: 115 miles of trails will give 43% of Atlantans access to trails 10-minutes from their homes.
- 2037: 150 miles of trails will give 53% of Atlantans access to trails 10-minutes from their homes.
- 2052: 535 miles of trails will give 95% of Atlantans access to trails 10-minutes from their homes.
