Recently, the Atlanta Journal Constitution covered a devastating story about an elderly couple, Dorothy and George Williams, who were left with their home completely gutted by a conman contractor. Thankfully, Atlanta filmmaker, writer and director, Tyler Perry, is saving the day
What happened to the Williams’ House?
Unfortunately, the scam artist, Steven Chastain, tricked the Atlanta couple by telling them he was a contractor with “HomeSmart Services.” He told them he could make repairs to the home for $147,000. And after taking out a loan, the couple paid him the initial $60,000 to get to work.
But instead of seeing the repairs the couple was so excited for, they were scammed. Chastain took everything, leaving their home damaged, empty, unrecognizable, and completely unlivable. And with their $60,000 in his pocket.
How is Tyler Perry saving the day?
After posting a GoFundMe, which you can find here, the Atlanta couple was having to live away from their beloved home, and in “stark conditions,” according to the AJC.
And that’s when Tyler Perry stepped in to help. The famous filmmaker, known for his incredible movies, filmed right here in Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, called Dorothy Williams on the phone. He assured her everything would be okay. According to the AJC, Dorothy Williams said that he told her on the phone, “Calm down, take a deep breath you don’t have to worry anymore. I’m going to pay for everything.”
More than just home repairs, the AJC reports that according to the family, “Perry is covering all the home repairs and the $100,000-plus loan they took out to pay Chastain.”
And in even better news, Perry said the couple won’t have to wait long to be back home! They may be able to move back in in just a few months! We’re so happy to hear this amazing story.
