If you’ve noticed low water pressure or no water at all in Atlanta today, you aren’t alone. And there’s a good reason for it… a massive water main break in Downtown Atlanta has cause water to be shut off all over the area.
According to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constution, “Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management announced water service would be halted at 5 p.m. in much of Atlanta, including all of downtown, so crews can work to repair breaks on a 48-inch and 36-inch transmission line -that carries large volumes of water to the metropolitan area.'”
What does this mean for Atlanta?
Many restaurants were forced to close this evening due to the shut down. Restaurants in Little Five Points, Downtown, Grant Park, Old Fourth Ward, the West End, East Atlanta, Midtown, Inman Park and Candler Park have all announced closures according to the AJC. If you’ve got plans to eat out tonight, better check on the restaurant’s social media before you go!
There are also more serious closures, including non-emergency appointments at Grady Memorial Hospital, which have been canceled, and closures at the Atlanta and Fulton County offices. The Georgia Aquarium has closed for guests, but they assured Atlantans that all the animals are safe. Zoo Atlanta has also closed down to guests, but they said they have contingency plans to keep their animals hydrated and safe as well.
Another important cancellation is the Megan Thee Stallion concert, which State Farm Arena announced on Social Medial. All tickets for tonight’s show will be honored for Sunday, June 2nd, however.
There is also a BOIL WATER ADVISORY in effect, out of an abundance of caution.
When will the water main be fixed?
Much of the city’s water was shut off at 5pm for water main repairs to be completed. There is currently no timeline for when the service will be restored. The department of Watershed Management has aSked that all residence limit water use to allow water pressure to rebuild.
