According to a new report conducted by Risk Strategy, Atlanta ranks as the 3rd worst city in the United States for driving… confirming what most of us in the ATL already knew.
Atlanta’s driving score
Coming in at the 3rd worst city for driving in the U.S., Risk Strategy reports an average of 3.86 accidents per 1,000 drivers in Atlanta, which might not seem like a lot, but remember, with most people driving every day, we’ve got a ton of drivers on the roads.
They also comment on the congestion in the ATL, ranking it at 37%. If you’ve ever sat in rush hour traffic in the heart of Atlanta, then you know congestion is a definite problem here.
How’d they figure this out?
Risk Strategies says, “We created a meta-ranking of the 50 most populous US cities to identify the best and worst cities for driving.” They used these variables:
- Car accidents per 1,000 drivers via LendingTree (25%)
- Motor vehicle deaths per 100,000 residents via FARS 2022 (25%)
- Average travel time per mile (in minutes) in 2023 via TomTom (25%)
- Congestion level (the average additional time, as a percentage, lost to traffic in 2023) via TomTom(25%)
