Autumn is the perfect time to leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind for a little trip into the vibrant colors of the changing fall foliage throughout the country. And the best way to enjoy all the stunning fall colors? That’s gotta be aboard Amtrak’s ‘Crescent,’ which was recently named one of the most scenic train journeys in the U.S. by The Independent and its US Travel Editor Ted Thornhill.
This gorgeous, one-night journey stretches out over 1,370 miles from the Big Apple to the Big Easy, New Orleans. And with Atlanta as one of the most prominent stops, Atlantans have the opportunity to ride the train down into New Orleans or head up to New York City.
What are some of the stop highlights abroad the Crescent?

It depends on which way you want to go. In Atlanta, trains heading to New Orleans depart in the morning while Northeast-bound trains depart at night. Can’t decide which way to go? Make your decision based off of these stops.
From Atlanta to New Orleans
- Birmingham, AL
- Tuscaloosa, AL
- Laurel, MS
- Slidell, LA
- New Orleans, LA
If you’re looking for a little persuasion in this direction, Amtrak notes, “One of the most scenic sections is travel over Lake Pontchartrain near New Orleans (via the longest rail bridge in the United States).”
From Atlanta to NYC
- Greenville, SC
- Charlotte, NC
- Charlottesville, VA
- Washington, DC
- Baltimore, MD
- New York City, NY
And for a little persuasion in this direction, with a destination like NYC, there are endless things to do and see!
Classes & accommodation options

Ready to take the leap? There are a couple different options for riders, with varying choices depending on which direction you book your trip. Here are the basics:
- Coach Class – Comfortable seats starting around $100 per person for the full journey.
- Roomette Sleeper – From $400 for two, including meals.
- Bedroom Sleeper – From $900 for two, with meals included.
But don’t worry about missing out with a ‘bad seat’! There ARE no bad seats. You’ll be able to experience the incredible views and fall scenery from every seat… so don’t forget your camera!
When should I book my trip?
Our advice? Book between late September to November for the best fall colors along the route. Of course, there’s always something to see regardless of when you go… but for fall leaves, don’t leave too late.
