We have some great news for all our Zoo Atlanta lovers! There’s a new little baby to come see–and it’s absolutely adorable!
Zoo Atlanta’s adult female sloth, Nutella, gave birth to her new infant on August 9th, 2024. The Zoo announced the birth 2 days ago (August 14th, 2024), with photos of this super cute little sun-loving baby! Nutella and another male sloth at the zoo, Cocoa, are the parents of this little fuzzy baby!
About the new babies parents: Nutella and Cocoa
Nutella and Cocoa are Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth, which are facing more and more threats in the wild. According to Zoo Atlanta:
Nutella and Cocoa were recommended to breed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP), which seeks to maintain healthy, genetically diverse, and self-sustaining animal populations in accredited zoos.
Nutella is 7 years old and Cocoa is 31. (But don’t worry, this is normal for sloths!) This new baby is their second offspring, after their first baby, Olivia, was born on Father’s Day in 2023!
About baby Hoffmann’s two-toed sloths
Zoo Atlanta writes about their new baby,
Although sloths are famous for their slow movements, sloth infants develop at a notably more rapid pace than do most other mammal babies. They are born fully furred, with their eyes open and teeth already present, and have fully developed claws for clinging to their mothers.
