Atlanta is hosting a live Bach concert synchronized with high-resolution NASA cosmic imagery at Variety Playhouse featuring acclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley

From the total lunar eclipse in March to the Perseids in August, the ATL has been blessed with amazing cosmic events this year. And more are yet to come, and we’re not just talking about the major Orionid and Geminid meteor showers. This season, a live piano performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s greatest compositions will also serve a side of pulsating projections captured by NASA and the ESA at Bach in Space Atlanta.

You’ll hear selections from The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Italian Concerto, and the Goldberg Variations performed by American classical pianist and public radio show host Christopher O’Riley, while marveling at sweeping galactic views.

What is Bach in Space?

Bach in Space is a live piano performance of the Baroque composer’s most famous melodies, including the Goldberg Variations and The Well-Tempered Clavier. The concert features high-resolution cosmic imagery from NASA and the (European Space Agency) ESA, with projections of deep-space phenomena complementing the performance. The visual pacing is carefully crafted to follow the precise phrasing, subtle dynamics, and rhythmic ebb and flow of the piano, immersing audiences in a unique multi-sensory journey.

Bach and the cosmos: A natural harmony

Johann Sebastian Bach’s compositions have long been celebrated for their emotional depth and intricate contrapuntal structures. His music moves with an extraordinary internal logic, where individual melody lines come together in unified harmony. When paired with deep-space imagery, Bach’s musical genius finds a visual counterpart.

Think of the Engraved Hourglass Nebula, whose glowing orange-red rings enclose a striking eye at its center, reminding us of the German composer’s symmetry and precision. Even chaotic structures, like the Antennae Galaxies’ blue curves and pink star-forming knots, echo the Goldberg Variations’ layered tension.

Whether you’re a longtime classical music listener, an astronomy enthusiast, or simply seeking a deeply moving cultural experience, Bach in Space will be held at the Variety Playhouse on select dates. The converted music theater now welcomes intimate live shows, offering the perfect backdrop to Bach’s melodies. Because the performance relies on an intimate, reflective atmosphere, limited seating is available for each session.
