Earlier this summer, the iconic Cumberland Barnes & Noble made a shocking and sad announcement: they were closing up shop. The team at Barnes & Noble said in a statement,
We have loved being a part of your community for the last 30 years and will miss being here. We continue to look for a suitable new store in this neighborhood.

When did the Cumberland Barnes & Noble open?
This Barnes & Noble location opened up shop at 2952 Cobb Parkway in 1996, making it a decades-old fixture of the neighborhood.
The store has spent the last several weeks doing a ‘Big Book Sale’, with 30-50% off in stock merchandise. Tons of Atlantans have found Barnes & Noble books, merch & prizes for great discounts.
Tomorrow, August 19th, 2026, the store will officially close.
What’s going into the space next?
According to local reports, the Cumberland Barnes & Noble could be replaced by a new RaceTrac.
According to a statement given to Channel 2 Action News by a RaceTrac spokesperson,
I can confirm that we plan to open both a RaceTrac store and a Potbelly Sandwich Shop at 2952 Cobb Parkway. RaceTrac has been proudly based in Atlanta for 50 years, and we’re looking forward to offering something special in our hometown. We will share more details about this exciting project as it progresses.
As we know more about what’s happening to this space in Cumberland, we’ll be sure to let you know! For now, we’re saying goodbye to one of the oldest Barnes & Noble locations in both the Metro ATL area & the country.
