If you love all things celestial, we’ve got some great news for March! Not only will this month’s full moon be a rare ‘Blood Moon,’ but it’s also going to be a total lunar eclipse! This lunar event will be one of the biggest celestial events until 2029–so you definitely don’t wanna miss out! Here are all the details you need to know about the Blood Moon and total lunar eclipse!
When is March’s total lunar eclipse?
First thing’s first. When should I look up into the sky?
According to Forbes, “The eclipse occurs overnight on March 13-14, 2025.”
Specifically, in the Eastern Time Zone, the total eclipse will occur from about 2:26am until 3:32am on March 14th, 2025. In other words, it’s time to either set your alarm or pull an all-nighter!
Will I be able to see the total lunar eclipse from Atlanta?
Yes! Forbes states, “The eclipse will be visible across North and South America. All contiguous U.S. states and all Canadian provinces will have a clear view of the entire event, weather permitting.”
The entire eclipse is estimated to last about 366 minutes, which is just over 6 hours. But you’ll be able to see the totality of the lunar eclipse for more than an hour–at around 65 minutes.
Will the moon actually look red?
Actually, yes. Unlike some other moons, which are named things that they are not the color of (think Blue Moon or Strawberry Moon), the Blood Moon does actually appear with a reddish or orange-ish tint. According to Forbes, this is due to “Rayleigh scattering, the same process that makes sunsets appear red.”
Don’t miss out on the rare blood moon with a total lunar eclipse this March! Look up to the skies, Atlanta!
