If you woke up this morning in the Atlanta area to haze and smoke in the air, you’re not alone. Some reports are linking the haze and smoke to a chemical fire that occurred in Conyers, GA. This event occurred less than 30 minutes from Atlanta.
What happened?
According to a report by UPI News on Sunday,
Authorities said a small fire ignited on the roof of the facility at about 5 a.m. However, water spraying from a malfunctioning sprinkler came into with water-reactive chemicals at the plant, sending a plume of smoke into the air.
Though the small fire was contained, a second fire erupted at the plant a few hours later, the cause of which was unknown. That blaze was put out by 4 p.m., according to authorities, who said the facility’s roof had collapsed along with several walls.
The fire and chemical reactions sent a plume of smoke into the air that could be seen from all around, billowing over the plant. Some reports even saw the plume from as far away as the Atlanta Airport, over 30 miles away.
According to UPI News, “Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel told reporters that they expect the plume of smoke to remain for ‘several days.‘”
In a report following the incident from the Atlanta Journal-Consitution, this reaction “led to the evacuation order of about 17,000 people and several road closures, including I-20, which remained closed until Monday morning.“
As for the traffic and road closures, all roads seem to be re-opened for travel as of now.
Many are now reporting the smell of chlorine in the air in the city, and haze/smoke as well. Mayor Dickens says the city is aware of these reports, and is sending Atlanta Fire Rescue to test the air and see what’s in it.
