Tennis fans and Atlantans have been watching young tennis star Coco Gauff rise to stardom in the tennis world over the past few years, and now, she’s even more of a superstar! The 20 year old athlete from Atlanta won the U.S. Open in 2023, and this past weekend, she took home another incredible title!
Coco Gauff just won the WTA Finals!
This year, the WTA Finals were held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In the Finals, Gauff competed against Olympic gold medalist, Qinwen Zheng of China. According to Forbes, the 3 hours and 4 minute match was “the longest final at the WTA Finals since time stats started being tracked in 2008.”
The match was full of emotional twists and turns, ending in a third-set tie breaker. So, the match was neck-and-neck right up until the end, when Gauff pulled off her iconic win!
This win earned Gauff the Billie Jean King Trophy and her ninth career WTA Tour singles title! And… the largest sum of prize money in WTA history!

Gauff took home a massive $4.8 million in prize money, breaking the professional women’s tennis payment record! Gauff continues to be one of the highest paid female athletes in the world.

The previous record prize money holder from the WTA Finals was Ashleigh Barty, who won the 2019 edition in Shenzhen, China, and received $4.42 million.
