Dolly Parton’s elopement
As far as personal connection goes, Dolly Parton’s most intimate connection to Georgia is definitely her 1966 elopement with her husband Carl Dean, in Ringgold, Georgia, a small North Georgia town, about an hour and a half from Atlanta.
The couple were married for 59 years, until Dean’s passing in 2025. According to a local report by FOX 5 Atlanta, “Local residents believed Parton’s health declined following her husband’s death, noting she had recently mentioned neglecting her own health while caring for him.”
Parton told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview,
We got married in Georgia so it wouldn’t be in the Tennessee papers and so my producer at the time wouldn’t find out. My mother-in-law bought me that little white dress.

Dolly’s commitment to Southern literacy
Dolly Parton wanted to be remembered for ‘books not looks,’ and she definitely will be. Her commitment to literacy in the south, especially in rural Tennessee was a beautiful legacy to leave behind. But her philanthropy stretched further than just East Tennessee.
According to GPB,
Parton’s donations through her Imagination Library became a symbol of hope as she provided 300 million books to children through literacy programs on three continents in the past two decades. Through the United Way of Central Georgia, for example, Parton’s organization benefited young readers in Bibb County.

Dolly Parton also starred in many movies that filmed throughout Georgia & Metro Atlanta. Some of her famous films include:
