
For people watching the sky in the ATL today, you might’ve seen something a little unexpected falling out of the clouds! Many reported what seemed like a fireball or a meteor coming down to earth… here’s what we know.
Was that a meteor?
It’s hard to say exactly what it was yet, as authorities are still monitoring the situation.
CNN reported,
The American Meteor Society has received numerous reports of a fireball over the US Southeast on Thursday afternoon – reports that are logged on its website.
The operations manager for the American Meteor Society continued, telling CNN,
It looks to be a ‘daytime fireball’ that caused a sonic boom. This is usually indicative of a (meteor) dropping a fireball, but not always.
CNN also clarified that “The Federal Aviation Administration told CNN that there was no unusual aircraft activity in the area.”
When was the fireball in the sky?
According to the National Weather Service, “This streak was detected between 12:51 to 12:56 p.m” and could be seen over the Southeastern United States, including in Georgia and the Atlanta area.
Reports were made from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee, so far.
