According to an update from the United States Department of Transportation’s National Airspace System Status, no flights are leaving Hartsfield Jackson Airport this morning.
The department issued a ‘ground stop’ shortly after 9am, which has been extended again until 9:59 PM EST., Friday, January 10th, 2025.
The Federal Aviation Administration reports, “Departures to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International are delayed avg. 236 mins. ”
How many flights have been delayed/cancelled?
Currently, more than 2,800 flights have been cancelled nationwide, causing chaos in air travel.
Atlanta Patch reports, “As of 2 p.m., more than 900 flights flying in or out of the [Atlanta] airport had been canceled or delayed.”
What is a ground stop?
It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a ground stop is an air traffic control procedure that requires all aircraft that fit certain criteria to remain on the ground. In other words, no planes can fly into or out of the Atlanta airport while these measures are in effect.
Similarly, a ground delay means delayed flights for safety.
