When you think of North Georgia, you probably think of beautiful mountains, scenic views, cute small towns, and holiday destinations. But do you think of Renaissance castles? Probably not. It’s time to change that perspective! Uhuburg Castle is the perfect getaway to enjoy a little peek into the past, all without having to rev up the Time Machine! Keep scrolling for all the details.
What is Uhuburg Castle?

Wait… has there always been a castle hidden in the North Georgia mountains? Nope! Actually, Uhuburg Castle is a new attraction… and we couldn’t be more excited about it.
The castle began construction in 2008, and officially opened in May of 2023. Since then, it has hosted small private events and select weekend openings for the public, along with their first-ever CastleFaire Renaissance Festival!
Why is it called Uhuburg?
Uhuburg is named for the largest owl in the world, the Eurasian Owl. In German, this owl is named Uhu, and uhu translates to Eagle Owl in English. Burg is the German word for castle. Thus, the English translation of the German term Uhuburg is Eagle Owl Castle.
How do you pronounce that? It’s ooo-hoo-berg castle!
What is Uhuburg Castle like?

Uhuburg Castle is created in the architectural style of the Renaissance to honor and reflect the Scientific Age and Enlightenment values of truth, beauty and wisdom.
And Uhuburg Castle respects and reflects its local roots as well! They say,
Uhuburg is not a copy of another castle but has many of the features of European design. It is intended to be uniquely characteristic to the southern Appalachia Mountains and decorated with the local animals and fauna, and recognize local customs and music as much as is possible.
As far as actual features, Uhuburg has
- twelve towers
- one turret
- three gatehouses
- an eight story lookout tower
- Great Hall
- cloistered walls with rampart and lower walkways
- ten guest chambers
- two apartments
- a master chamber
- a tropical atrium
- grotto
- two acres of courtyard gardens
In short terms, you’ll feel like you’ve really stepped into a Renaissance castle!
