We’ve had quite the summer here in Atlanta. With tons of fun events and cool things to do, it might be a little bittersweet to let go of the summer of 2024, but just remember: there’s even more fun to be had this fall! As holiday season approaches, we know we’re in for lots of treats (and maybe some fun tricks too!)
One of the biggest markers of the changing seasons is shorter days and more darkness… and that’s coming soon. Tomorrow, September 3rd, 2024, will be Atlanta’s last 8pm sunset of the year, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.
When will fall begin?
Of course, it’s important to note that while cooler weather and earlier sunsets sure make it feel like fall, the season doesn’t officially start until all the coffee shops have pumpkin spice lattes. KIDDING! Autumn officially begins on the Fall Equinox, on September 22nd. On this day, the nighttime and daytime hours are equal. From there, the days will continue to get shorter and shorter, leading into winter.
What is the shortest day of the year?
The shortest day of the year will occur on December 21st, 2024. This is the beginning of astronomical winter. Even though it “feels like winter” much before December 21st, that’s the actual beginning of winter. From there, the days will slowly, gradually, get longer and longer.
So get ready to say ‘Hello Darkness, my old friend’! Starting tomorrow! And for those of us with Seasonal Depression… go ahead and break out those sunset lamps!
And get ready for all the super fun things to do this fall in Atlanta! (Need help? We’ve got you with all the best things to do this fall season, right here!)
