Celebrating 30 years this past August in the ATL, My Sister’s Room is a beloved staple of the Atlanta queer community, especially for ATL sapphics. As the only lesbian bar in the city, and one of the only remaining lesbian bars in the country, MSR is more than just a fun place to go with friends or a date… it’s a crucial part of LGBTQ+ culture and history.

My Sister’s Room

My Sister’s Room, which was originally founded in 1996, is owned and operated by by Jami Atlanta and Jen-Chase Daniels.
They’re known for their incredible events: from comedy to drag to line dancing and beyond. Oh, and yes, they’ve got some of the best wings in the ATL.
In a message for their 30th anniversary, owners Jen & Jami said,
Today, My Sister’s Room proudly stands as one of the longest-running lesbian bars in the South. Where everyone is welcome. We believe in bringing people together through music, entertainment, laughter, and a place where everyone can feel welcome. A second/chosen family… Thirty years wouldn’t have been possible without Atlanta. To everyone who has walked through our doors, supported our events, danced on our floors, performed on our stages, and helped make MSR what it is today, THANK YOU! Especially our employees!!
Lesbian bars in the U.S.

Smithsonian Magazine reported in 2021 that in the “late 1980s, an estimated 200 lesbian bars existed in the United States. By 2019, researchers believed only 15 remained.”
From hundreds of lesbian bars, down to fewer than twenty, the sharp decline of lesbian bars in the U.S. makes the remaining bars even more precious to the community.
Thankfully, the number is back on the rise–even if it’s happening slowly.
According to The Lesbian Bar Project, an award-winning documentary series that tells the stories of lesbian & queer bars from around the world, My Sister’s Room is one of only 36 remaining lesbian bars in the United States.
And narrowing it down to the south: My Sister’s Room is one of only 6 in the South… and that’s being VERY generous with the definition of ‘south.’ (Texas, we’re including you for this one!)
My Sister’s Room is also the longest-running lesbian bar in the Southeast, giving it a very important history in our region.
