Want to eat like a local in the ATL?
Well we’ve rounded up five of our hidden gem favorites that you’ve gotta check out right here in Atlanta! Whether you’re craving a little coffee pick-me-up or you need a full meal, these are the spots real ATLiens go for a bite! Keep scrolling for the full list, in no particular order!
El Progreso #14 (Prison Tacos)

If you’ve ever heard anyone talk about how good Atlanta’s prison tacos are, and thought… ‘hey, what on earth is that?’ then you’re in the right spot. El Progreso #14 is an authentic Mexican grocery store, nicknamed ‘prison tacos’ due to its proximity to a prison. But don’t be deterred from the name! Prison tacos are a delicious ATL staple that all the locals love.
Located in East Atlanta, enter the grocery store and go allllll the way to the back to find the food counter. There, you’ll be able to order delicious, authentic Mexican meals like: tacos al pastor, carnitas, and more! Oh, and we can’t forget to mention, this place is HELLA affordable!
The Bando
If you want to eat wings like a REAL local in Atlanta, then The Bando is the place to get ’em. This Black-owned wing spot is all about making the most delicious wings, uplifting the community, and celebrating Black excellence.
If you’ve never been, obviously we have to recommend trying their ‘Crack Wings’ which come in a 6, 8, or 12 piece… and look, get more than you think you’re gonna want because they’re GOOD.
But The Bando is more than just a delicious wing spot: it’s also a Black History museum and a mentorship program. Learn more about The Bando on their website, here!
Gaja Korean Bar

Gaja is another East Atlanta staple, hidden right in the heart of EAV. When you enter through the side door, you’ll be shocked at how large Gaja actually is inside, since it looks so small from the outside!
Once you’re seated, you’ll find delicious Korean favorites made authentically and with care! We’ve GOTTA recommend the braised pork belly or beef bulgogi (which can also be served vegan)!
Pollo Primo
You might’ve heard of Pollo Primo as one of Finn Wolfhard’s favorite spots to eat in the ATL, and we’ve gotta say… Mike from Stranger Things has taste!
At Pollo Primo, you get chicken, and it’s the best. chicken. ever! You can either get a 1/4 of a bird, a 1/2 of a bird, a whole bird or two birds, and then choose from a selection of delicious sides to accompany your main dish (again, chicken).
Banjo Coffee

Listen, the ATL is FULL of delicious coffee shops and sure, Banjo has amazing coffee! BUT that’s not what we’re here to talk about! Banjo serves up one of the best breakfast burritos in the city, which might come as a surprise to visitors… but the locals know.
But there’s a secret on how to order, and we’re gonna let you in on it! Order a bacon breakfast burrito… with no beans. It’ll be closer to their original recipe, and it’s SO worth it! And make sure you get their homemade salsa to dip it in. It’s a truly delicious treat!
