A Better Breeze is coming to Atlanta, and we’re gearing up for the change. MARTA announced a system-wide update last year, and now, it’s time for the transition to start actually happening. Soon, your silver cards will be obsolete, and you’ll need a new, orange MARTA card. Keep scrolling for all the details.
Wait… what’s going on?

MARTA is updating the whole payment system
Customers should continue using the existing Breeze mobile app, Breeze cards, and equipment until the customer transition period from March 28 to May 2, 2026. Current Breeze fare media is not compatible with the better Breeze system and will not work after May 2, 2026.
What does the new Better Breeze system include?

MARTA’s rollout of the Better Breeze system promises a much smoother transit experience for all Atlantans. Here’s what’s coming with the Better Breeze:
- Quick and easy contactless payment: Simply tap a physical bank card or use the mobile wallet feature on a smart phone or watch at a rail station faregate or bus validator.
- New equipment: Customers will use new faregates and fareboxes, validators, and Breeze vending machines systemwide.
- New faregates are harder to tamper with and can be monitored and adjusted remotely, reducing incidents of fare evasion and resulting in a safer, more secure transit system.
- New cards: The new system will use new physical cards with a fresh design and continued options for multi-day and monthly passes.
- New app: Breeze Mobile 2.0 is going away. Customers will need to download an updated app and create a new account where they can store fare.
Does my current Breeze balance roll over?
Sort of. Here’s what MARTA says about your current balance:
Customers are encouraged to spend down their stored fare by May 2, 2026. Remaining balances may be transferred from a current registered account to a new, registered Breeze account May 2 through Oct. 30, 2026.
Is the MARTA fare going up?

Nope. Fare is staying exactly the same:
- $2.50 for a one-way trip
- $1 for Reduced Fare and streetcar
- $4 for Mobility
Where do I get my new Better Breeze card?
Beginning March 28, 2026, MARTA riders will be able to purchase new cards at Breeze vending machines, Ride Stores, Reduced Fare offices, and pop-up locations systemwide.
The new cards are orange, so you’ll know you’ve got the right one!
