There has been talk for years about bringing an NHL team back to the ATL area, and we might be one step closer to seeing that goal come to fruition. A developmental team made up of Jamestown Properties (known for developing Atlanta’s famous Ponce City Market) and New York Life just submitted a rezoning application to transform an outdated Alpharetta mall into a huge mixed-use district. And at the center of this new development? A 20,000-seat arena, similar to the Battery… perfect for enticing an NFL franchise to the area.

Where would this new mixed-use development be located?

According to the developmental team’s rezoning application, the NHL-sized arena will be located in the outdated North Point Mall in Alpharetta. And along with the NHL hockey arena, the development will also include a music hall, retail, green spaces and more.
The North Point Mall is located at 1000 North Point Cir, Alpharetta, GA 30022.
Wait… doesn’t Atlanta have an NHL team?
No, Atlanta does not currently have an NHL team. Atlanta’s two previous NHL teams didn’t last very long, the Flames in 1972 (which moved to Calgary in 1980) and the Thrashers in 1997 (which moved to Canada in 2011).
Recently, there was also a bid for another NHL hockey-sized development in Forsyth County, but that is also a separate project from the Alpharetta development.
So… does this mean we will have a hockey team?

Not exactly. Transforming the North Point Mall into a hockey arena is meant to entice an NHL team to Atlanta.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “The NHL has not committed to giving the Atlanta area another team after the Flames and Thrashers both came and left.”
Now, all we can do is wait to see what happens! But, as always, as soon as we know any NHL updates, we’ll let you know too!
