We’re feeling the whiplash of the driest month on record in Atlanta–right after monumental flooding from Hurricane Helene.
According to Atlanta meteorologist Brad Nitz,
We’ve had ZERO rainfall in Atlanta this month, and none is in sight. There’s never been a month with no rain since records began in 1878. We’ve had some very dry months, but it’s conceivable that we end this month with a 0.00″ for the first time.
Of course, fall is generally the driest season in the Southeast, but having an entire month with zero rainfall is extremely out of the ordinary.
And according to 11Alive News, the last measurable rainfall in Atlanta was on September 29th, 2024.
Has Atlanta ever got a month without any rain?
According to the record, no, never. Of course, we can only look back as far as records go, and the earliest weather record for the city is 1878.
That means that this October breaks a nearly 150-year record, but since we have no data from before that date… it could be even longer.
What does this mean for us?
Other than watering your outdoor plants a little extra these days, there’s no need to panic. There’s not much we can do except relax and wait for some more rain to arrive.
Right now there are no warnings in place in Atlanta.
When will it rain again?
Right now… there isn’t rain on the forecast. The days look mostly sunny with highs in the mid 70s to low 80s, and lows in the 50s.
It seems like we might have to wait for the next cold front to push through to get a little moisture. But for now–enjoy the sunshine and dry weather!
