You might remember her from your childhood: Priscilla, the Pink Pig! Maybe you have childhood memories of riding Pricilla all around the toy store, or as your mom grabbed gifts and goods around the holidays. Or maybe you’re just intrigued by the idea of a pink pig making the holidays even more festive! No matter what your experience is with Priscilla the Pink Pig, you’re in for a treat this holiday season!
What is The Pink Pig?
For 70 years, Priscilla was a staple of holiday toy shopping. In 1953, the Pink Pig debuted as a children’s train ride in Rich’s department store in Downtown Atlanta. Shoppers would see her tracks on the ceiling of Rich’s toy department, proving one and for all that pigs could, in fact, fly!
According to the Atlanta History Center,
Two years later, the track was reconfigured to send riders out of toy land and onto the roof for an up-close look at the Great Tree. Demand for the attraction was so high that a second train, Percival, was added in 1964. The twin pig monorails remained there until 1991 when Rich’s downtown store closed.
From there, Rich’s (which had merged with Macy’s) donated the pink pigs to Atlanta History Center in 1996. After a few revivals to spread holiday cheer, and a new Pricilla ride at the Lenox Mall, the pink pigs officially retired again in 2021.
That is, until NOW!
Now, Atlantans can meet Penelope, or “Penny” for short! The iconic Pink Pig ride is returning to Atlanta, and you don’t wanna miss out!
Where can I find the Pink Pig now?
Penelope the Pink Pig will be gracing us with her presence at the Georgia Festival of Trees at the Gas South Convention Center!
The Festival says,
The updated train with a fresh, new look is a rail-less, open ride providing a unique trek through the festival.
