What is Gnomes & Gardens?
Gnomes & Gardens is Rock City’s springtime adventure that celebrates all the beautiful blooms and mischievous gnome shenanigans happening in the Georgia mountains!
This season, visitors can wander through colorful wildflowers, while soft mossy greens blanket the rock walls and winding stone pathways, creating the kind of magic you can only experience when you slow down and look a little closer!
And as you stroll through the gardens and pathways, keep your eyes peeled for ancient gnomes on Rock City’s interactive adventure of Gnome Quest!
About the gnomes of Rock City
Wait… did you say ancient gnomes? Yep. You read that right! There are gnomes all around Lookout Mountain and Rock City!
And the history of these gnomes is super cool, too. Rock City states on their website,
Many of those cheerful little statues were brought in by our founders, Garnet and Frieda Carter, who sourced them from Zwergstatt-Gräfenroda—a legendary German gnome-maker that’s been crafting the figurines since 1874. Some of Rock City’s oldest gnomes are nearly 140 years old, already vintage when Frieda lovingly placed them among the rocks and rhododendrons.
Due to Lookout Mountain’s humid summers and frigid winters, the original terracotta gnomes faced a constant battle against the elements. And even though Rock City’s Innovations team works hard to patch, paint and preserve these beloved relics of Rock City’s storybook past, they aren’t built to last outside forever.
But don’t worry! You can still see and enjoy some beautifully crafted representations of the original ancient gnomes, created by the Innovations team using old-world techniques and modern technology!
