How did the Strawberry Moon get its name?

Time And Date says that the full moon this month is named after wild strawberries, which ripen mostly in June. These strawberries were gathered by the Indigenous peoples in the United States. Other reported native names for the full moon include: Berries Ripen Moon, Green Corn Moon, and Hot Moon. European names for the moon (from Celtic tribes and English names) include Horse Moon, Dean Moon, Rose Moon, Flower Moon and Planting Moon. Reportedly, some Europeans also called this June full moon the Mead Moon, since this is the perfect time for mowing the meads (aka meadows).
Is the Strawberry Moon really pink?
No, the strawberry moon probably won’t have any kind of pinkish tint to it!
What is a ‘major lunar standstill’?

The reason the moon will hang so low in the sky this month is because we’re entering a ‘major lunar standstill.’
Which is, according to EarthSky,
…we’re near what’s called a Major Lunar Standstill. It’s all about the inclination of the moon’s orbit, which undergoes an 18.6-year cycle. The cycle happens because the moon’s orbit is being slowly dragged around – mostly due to the pull of the sun – every 18.6 years. This year’s Major Lunar Standstill culminated in January 2025.
So grab a seat and watch the moonrise tonight, Atlanta! You’ll be glad you did!
