According to Time And Date, June’s full moon, the Strawberry Moon, will be full on Friday, June 21st, at 9:07pm! You’ll be able to look up and see the beautiful full moon illuminating the sky over Atlanta!
Why is it called the Strawberry Moon?
Time And Date says that the full moon this month is named after wild strawberries, which ripen mostly in June. These strawberries were gathered by the Indigenous peoples in the United States. Other reported native names for the full moon include: Berries Ripen Moon, Green Corn Moon, and Hot Moon. European names for the moon (from Celtic tribes and English names) include Horse Moon, Dean Moon, Rose Moon, Flower Moon and Planting Moon. Reportedly, some Europeans also called this June full moon the Mead Moon, since this is the perfect time for mowing the meads (aka meadows).
What does the Strawberry Moon mean?
About every two decades, the Strawberry Moon coincides with the summer solstice. This year, the summer solstice occurs on June 20th, 2024. The summer solstice is the ‘longest day of the year.’ Not in actual hours, of course, but in the number of hours of daylight.
Whether you look at the moon as a pretty scientific part of the sky or as something spiritual, we can all agree, there’s something lovely about when the moon is full in the sky. Some spiritualities use the Strawberry Moon to focus on love, abundance and prosperity. Other summery themes of the Strawberry Moon include ripening, fertility, and connection.
