The Halloween Season is just around the corner, and as you’re deciding on the perfect costume and scariest haunted house to visit, spice up your spooky season with a new experience. For the first time in a decade, the Atlanta Opera and Alliance Theatre are partnering together to bring to life a brand new, frightening opera: The Shining.
What is it?
Everyone’s heard of Stephen King’s classic thriller, The Shining, a story of possession and haunting, but you’ve never seen it like this before. Composer Paul Moravec and Librettist Mark Campbell bring the story to life on the stage in a truly terrifying and exciting way, and director for the stage, Brian Staufenbiel keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The Atlanta Opera and Alliance Theatre are excited to connect theatre and opera together, showing creatives how much overlap in performance the two can have.
Where can I see it?
The Shining is the season opener for both the Alliance Theatre and The Atlanta Opera, opening on Friday, September 15th.
It will be performed on the Coca-Cola Stage at the Alliance Theatre, and will run from September 15th through October 1st. Get more information on the Alliance Theatre’s Website.
The opera will be performed entirely in English, with English supertitles, so the audience can read along as the performers sing, in case operatic singing is challenging for any viewers to understand. The show is 14o minutes, including a 25 minute intermission.
Content Warning (from the Alliance Theatre Website):
“THIS PRODUCTION CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE, LOUD SOUNDS, SIMULATED GUNSHOTS, DEPICTED NUDITY, AND ADULT THEMES. BEST ENJOYED BY AUDIENCES 16 AND UP.”
If you’re in Atlanta for the start of the fall season, you definitely don’t want to miss this incredible, chilling production of The Shining.
