Born in late 19th-century Buenos Aires, tango is a fiery dance charged with passion, intimacy and drama. It’s one of the most recognizable styles of dance, and even appears on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists as an art form of great cultural significance. This season, “We Call It Tango” in Atlanta is bringing the treasures of tango all the way from the Argentine capital to the ATL for enchanting evenings of music and dance.
On selected dates over the coming months, a tango dance duo will be channeling the magic of legends like El Cachafaz, El Vasco and other iconic tango performers as they twist and twirl to the melodies produced by a gifted pianist and traditional bandoneon player.
What is “We Call It Tango”?
Following the story of Amelia in 1950s Buenos Aires, “We Call It Tango” is a tale of romance and adventure, a captivating spectacle that takes audiences through 13 famous tangos over the course of three acts. They say it takes two to tango, but at “We Call It Tango”, the spectacle combines mesmerizing dance performances with the rich melodies of a bandoneon player and pianist for an extra special evening featuring an authentic tango quartet.
Tango, its music, and the show
Thought to have originated in Río de la Plata during the 1880s, tango is a treasured Argentine art form, but its influences don’t just stop at Argentina’s borders. In fact, tango aficionados believe the dance was born out of a rich mixing of dances and musical styles from all over the world, including the Spanish-Cuban Habanera and the Uruguayan Candombe.
From Astor Piazzolla’s “Adios Nonino” and “Libertango” to Osvaldo Fresedo’s “Vida Mia”, a range of iconic tangos will be performed at this magnificent series of shows. Ready to feel the enchantment and flare of the tango for yourself? Take the lead and grab your tickets today…
