We’ve got some sad news, Atlanta. The long-awaited (and long dreaded) day is finally coming. Zoo Atlanta will say a final goodbye to its four beloved gentle giants before sending them back to China. Keep scrolling so we can answer all your questions, as well as share details about their Panda Palooza, the official farewell party.
When are the pandas returning to China?
Zoo Atlanta’s agreement with China expires in October of 2024. The giant pandas are expected to travel to China in mid October. Their sendoff party will be October 5th, 2024.
Zoo Atlanta states that they are “not able to share specifics on the pandas’ departure date; however, friends and fans are encouraged to plan farewell visits now.”
Are all four pandas leaving?
Yes. All four pandas will be leaving the zoo and heading to China.
Zoo Atlanta notes,
The giant pandas are at Zoo Atlanta through an agreement with China. Zoo Atlanta does not own the pandas; we have merely been fortunate enough to be their stewards and introduce so many people here in the U.S. to this species.
In addition, the terms to this agreement with China have always stated that the offspring of the original two pandas, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, will travel to China when they are of age. Since receiving the pandas on the program, Zoo Atlanta has sent 5 Atlanta-born offspring to China, where they currently live. The two youngest offspring of Lun Lun and Yang Yang, 8-year-olds Ya Lun and Xi Lun will go to China with their parents.
How long has Zoo Atlanta had pandas?
The giant pandas have been part of the cultural fabric of the city for 25 years.
How many U.S. zoos have pandas?
Including Zoo Atlanta, there are two U.S. zoos with giant pandas.
After mid October, only the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington D.C. will have giant pandas.
