Why is Atlanta one of the best cities for tree huggers?

With an overall score of 57.42/100, Atlanta is a tree-lover’s dream! Not only do we have tons of trees, but we have access to several public gardens and Arboretums. And to top it all off, the City of Atlanta has a goal to conserve and plant 1 million trees by 2030 with help from local nonprofits.

How did Lawn Love come up with this ranking?

To measure up urban tree canopies of the U.S., Lawn Love looked at 14 metrics to rank 2025’s Top Cities for Tree Huggers. They say,
For each of the 500 biggest U.S. cities, we then gathered data on each factor from the sources listed below the table. We eliminated 32 cities — including Houston, San Diego, Jacksonville, and Tucson — lacking sufficient data in a single category, resulting in a final sample size of 468 cities.
The categories included things like:
- tree canopy percentage
- tree canopy coverage
- number of arboretums/public gardens
- number of urban tree initiatives
- number of native tree and shrub species
- drought index score
