This Thursday is the 4th of July, and we’re already excited to celebrate! From all the fun events and block parties around town, to amazing firework shows in the city, Atlanta definitely does Independence Day with a BANG! But this year, 11Alive News reports that there will be a Heat Advisory in effect from 1pm – 7pm across Metro Atlanta and much of Georgia.
The Heat Advisory
Tomorrow’s Heat Advisory should be taken very seriously. Actual temperatures should stay in the mid to high 90s, but with the humidity, it will feel a lot hotter. The day’s heat index could get up to 109 degrees, and it’ll ‘feel like’ above 100 for most of the day.
Spending prolonged periods of time in the sun/heat could cause dehydration, heat stroke or other heat-related illnesses. Staying safe is important, especially for a holiday when many people are spending the day outside.
What should I do to stay safe?
In a nutshell, stay cool and hydrated. Make sure to drink plenty of water and hydrating drinks, stay out of the sun as much as possible, and try to stay in an air conditioned room. We also recommend wearing lighter, looser clothing, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, and moving to a cool, shaded or air conditioned room if you’re feeling ill from the heat. Of course, there are still plenty of fun things you can do outside, but remember to take breaks inside and out of the sun! And wear your sunscreen!
It is also important to remember that a heat stroke is a medical emergency. If you or someone else is experiencing one, call 911.
Enjoy your 4th of July, Atlanta, but remember to stay cool, stay safe, and not to get too hot!
