Today, October 1st, 2024, is former president Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday! This is a momentous occasion because Carter’s 100th marks an historic event! President Carter is the first U.S. president to ever live to be 100 years old.
Jimmy Carter was born on Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, where he still lives today. Plains is about two and a half hours south of Atlanta.
Before Carter, the longest-living presidents were George H. W. Bush, who passed at age 94 in 2018, Gerald Ford, who passed at age 93 in 2006, and Ronald Reagan who died at age 93 in 2004.
How is Former President Carter doing?
President Carter was admitted into hospice care in February of 2023. In 2015, he was diagnosed with cancer, which tragically spread to his brain.
According to USA Today, Jason Carter, Carter’s grandson, says that the former president “doesn’t do much on his own physically” but is still very much mentally engaged in current events.
President Carter’s legacy
Before serving as president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, Carter was elected a state senator and later the governor of Georgia. Of course, he also received the Nobel Peace Prize in 20o2 for his work with human rights advocacy, peaceful negotiations development, and promoting economic and social justice.
It is also a beautiful note to add: before she passed away at the age of 96 in November, Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter were married for 77 years. This makes them the longest-married couple in presidential history. They had four children.
