Macon, Georgia is the Peach State’s trending travel destination for the year. Keep scrolling to find out more!
Why Macon?
Macon is a great spot to visit for many, many reasons, from art to history to film to nature… and beyond.
First and foremost, Macon’s got some truly incredible architecture and history to check out, including the Ocmulgee Mounds. Constructed around 900 C.E. by indigenous peoples, the Ocmulgee Mounds actually ranked as one of TIME Magazine’s 100 places to visit in 2025

And on top of that, the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park is actually in the running to become Georgia’s first-ever National Park, and the first National Park in the country to be co-managed by a removed indigenous tribe, in this case, the Muscogee Creek people. This would be a huge deal for our country and our state.
But that’s not the only reason to visit Macon. They’ve also got a beautiful, serene lakeside to enjoy in the warmer months, a quaint downtown full of locally owned and run businesses, and festivals and entertainment galore!
One of Macon’s highlights is definitely their iconic annual 10-day International Cherry Blossom Festival, which celebrates the thousands of cherry trees that blossom around the city every spring.

Basically… we’re saying Macon might just deserve a day trip or a weekend getaway in 2026, Atlanta! And the best part? It’s just a short drive (an hour to an hour and a half, depending on traffic and where exactly you’re coming from)!
So check out Macon. You’ll be glad you did! And hey, this is no shade on Savannah, either. We love our coastal towns too.
