This new South Downtown Entertainment District covers about 16 acres of South Downtown, and includes the areas of Hotel Row and Underground Atlanta.
Atlanta City Councilmember Alex Wan says the district includes portions of several streets, including Broad Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW, Forsyth Street, Mitchell Street, Ted Turner Drive SW, Nelson Street, Trinity Avenue, Peachtree Street and Alabama Street SW.
When will the open container district go into effect in South Downtown?
The new open container rule for South Downtown will go into effect on April 15th, 2026.
The area that will become an open container district is just a brief walk from Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which will be very helpful for the World Cup. But the Atlanta City Council made it clear that this new legislation is not solely for the World Cup.
Atlanta City Councilmember Jason Dozier notes,
South Downtown is where a lot of our city’s activities are going to be, not just the World Cup but also in the years beyond.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, more legislation and an additional temporary open container district might be on the way as well. They state,
Dozier also introduced new legislation on Monday that would create an additional, temporary public entertainment district downtown during the World Cup, from June 11 to July 19, that would also allow open containers. The parameters of that district were not immediately clear after the ordinance received a first reading Monday. It will be debated in committee next week.
So if exploring downtown with a delicious beverage in your hand sounds appealing to you, you’re absolutely in luck this April!
