With so many places to hike and walk in Atlanta, this one takes the cake as one of the most unique the city has to offer. The walking trail with a spooky twist is only a few miles away from the city center.
Doll’s Head Trail has outsider art nestled all the way throughout. Located in Constitution Lakes Park nature preserve, near an abandoned 19th century brick factory. Witness nature take over Atlanta’s urban past, and just down a cutting path is the Doll’s Head Trial.
The brickyard shut down more than 50 years ago, but in 2003 several paths were placed around the pretty lakes. Now a 125-acre preserve, the art installations within the miniature trail have become a great place for locals to express themselves.
The Doll’s Head Trail was started by local carpenter Joel Slaton. He envisioned an art project made from doll parts and other trash found on the site. He’s encouraged anyone who visits to create their own art and contribute to the project, and the collection has been growing ever since.
There are signs throughout stating that you must create art from the trash found within the reserve, so if you decide to go, make sure you stay green and stick to the rules. Everything must be ‘found’ and that’s a vital part of the project.
Though doll heads are a prominent fixture, there are several collages and bottle creations on offer too. Go and get creative, Atlanta!
The entrance is on the intersection of Moreland Ave and South River Industrial Blvd SE. Follow the signs from the parking lot to access the Doll’s Head Trail.
